Apple (Mac): Questions about downloads and iTunes?

When I download a file, e.g., a song, from the internet, a file is saves in the "downloads" folder and also in the iTunes folder, and then opened in iTunes. So, do I have duplicate copies of each song? If I delete the original file (not the itunes file), will the itunes file still exist? Thanks
